Call it Prezgate. The controversy over Gary Player''s decision to take Mike Weir as one of his two captain''s picks for his International team in next month''s Presidents Cup continues. Members of the Royal Montreal Golf Club, which will stage the event, have certainly been parsing Player''s decision, which he announced last Monday.

“Do you think Gary made the right pick with Mike?” one member asked over a beer at the club the other day. Another said, “Mike''s in a tough spot,” referring to the fact that fellow Canadian Stephen Ames finished ahead of him in the ranking of golfers eligible for the team. He added that the pressure will be on Weir to justify Player''s confidence in him.

Somebody else made the really key observation as it pertains to Player''s picking Weir, or at least not choosing Ames as one of his two picks. Player picked Australian Nick O''Hern. He finished 11th of players eligible based on their performance through the PGA Championship last week, one spot removed from the 10 automatic qualifiers. Ames was 16th, while Weir was 20th.

“Had Player not said anything, the whole thing would look better,” the gentleman said.
